THIS MONTH'S WINNER: RICHARD B.,
Daytona Beach, FL., USA :
Congratulations! Your dream has been selected as a winner of the G21 Sea of Dreams Contest! Here is your dream interpretation for your perusal; please email me back with your impression when you have the time? I would greatly appreciate it.
Meanwhile, we will use an alias if you prefer, so just let us know. This will appear in the Sea of Dreams column within a couple weeks or so.
Thank you and again, congratulations! Here is your entry and interpretation :
DREAM : I am in a city for an advertising convention. On my own, I go to a huge building, a whole block long, which is a sort of brightly lit department store that is supposed to be filled with all kinds of religious items (books, novelties, clothing, etc). I am wearing some kind of white, long, flowing garment similar in cut to a dressing gown. I progress through the store, looking but not buying. Only "one-way" movement is permitted in this store -- no backtracking allowed.
Although the rooms are not crowded, people are frequently blocking the small aisles and making my progress difficult. I feel frustrated and somewhat breathless. For a while I feel that someone is following me so I try to move even faster. The last room contains very dressy men's suits, shirts, ties and accessories; I cannot see any connection with spirituality in the items here -- or in many of the rooms, for that matter. The only way out of this store is a single exit door in this room. As I pass through the door, I see that night has fallen. There are many cars parked along the street, which goes up a big hill. At first I do not see anyone at all outside, but soon I hear a familiar voice calling my name from farther up this hill. I realize that it is my minister, Rev. Glo. For some reason I pretend I did not hear, and I hurry down the sidewalk so I can reenter the store and avoid talking to her.
ZenCyn's Interpretation :
My goodness, Richard, your entire dream is simply overflowing with symbology! Here is your interpretation broken down symbol by symbol :
City : symbolizes a small community of people who must work together to accomplish common goals.
Advertising Convention : just as it implies in waking life, this symbolizes a gathering of people who are networking about furthering their cause by spreading the word and drawing attention to their project.
Huge Building (a block long) : symbolizes having huge potential and destiny ahead of you.
Brightly lit department store of religious items : Brightly lit symbolizes that this situation is not unfamiliar to you. By situation, I mean what your dream is about. A Department store symbolizes a place where you have a variety of choices and selections to choose from. What are you "buying into" in your waking life? Religious items are a self-explanatory symbol that points to your faith and belief system as being the situation this dream is about. Books symbolize knowledge; novelties symbolize icons which may or may not be pertinent for you; and clothing can be descriptive of trying on various "costumes" or belief systems to see what "fits" you.
Wearing a white flowing gown : the color white symbolizes purity and truth. The flowing gown is reminiscent of the kind of garb worn by religious leaders during ceremonies, or the type of clothing that was popular during the days of Christ. In this dream, it seems to be particularly reminiscent of a spiritual seeker on a quest--you. It is common for dream symbols to repeat themselves in various ways throughout a dream, which I believe is what is happening with this symbol. It's a way of reinforcing what this dream's message is about.
Progress as you look but don't BUY : this simply means you are biding your time and choosing carefully, which is always wise. Your inner Self is not inclined to "buy into" what is being marketed to you right now, apparentally; but you are making good progress.
One-way only, no backtracking allowed : this, I believe, is symbolizing that you are feeling pressured to make a decision before you are ready, either by your own impatience & feelings of what is expected of you, or via the time tables of others. You are not allowing yourself/being allowed enough time to think on things or sort them out; instead you are encouraged to hurry and make choices "they" want you to make, or that you are pressuring yourself to make. You need more time & space to choose, even if it means not choosing this one particular belief system or path.
Frustrated, breathless : descriptive of how you feel, being pressured in such a hurried way.
Feel like Someone is following you : this is also suggestive of not being allowed the time or freedom to make your own careful choices. Note: this can be something you are doing to yourself, and not necessarily the actions of others. You may be trying to hurry yourself rather than letting things progress naturally, due to your own impressions that you need to make a spiritual choice rapidly. If that is the case, then this dream is a message to you that this is unnecessary and that you need to take it more slowly in order to make the correct choice for yourself.
Room of dressy men's clothing ; you cannot see connection with spirituality : this suggests that you may be seeing through their fascade of trying to "dress" something up (such as a belief system) to appear fancier or more important than it really is. These are your feelings of misgivings or doubt that you are working through about a waking life situation. Again, you need time to sort it all out. If you cannot pinpoint a particular person in your life doing this, then look towards yourself...is there an aspect within you that seems to be trying to "fool yourself" in order to rush a decision?
1 single exit : perhaps like it is "their way or the highway"? You are feeling rather hemmed in without many escape hatches available for comfort and freedom.
Night has fallen : night symbolizes the unknown aspects of yourself which are not enlightened as of yet.
CARS line the street going UPHILL : cars are symbolic of you in your waking life, in your physical body. Your physical body is used by the soul pretty much like we use a car...it's driven for awhile and we give it gas/nourishment & repairs as needed until it stops running, and then we go back home. Seeing a group of cars that are not yours may be symbolic of a type of peer situation you find yourself in...should you follow the pack mentality, or make your own unique choice that may be different from theirs, but right for you? A street is symbolic of your path in life, and going uphill means that this path is rather challenging at the moment.
You hear your minister's voice from farther up the hill, but ignore and duck back into the store you didn't even seem to like at all : this is pretty self-explanatory, also. You have a situation in your waking life in which a spiritual leader (OR an aspect of yourself which is demanding spiritual identity) is guiding you, and although you hear what they are saying, you aren't ready to go on that particular journey quite yet....you aren't ready to climb that summit. You still need to shop around some more before you make a serious commitment, whether you like it or not. You may be impatient and frustrated, wanting to make the right choices but simply not being ready. Everything happens in it's own good time, and your timing will be different from another person's, since we are all unique. My humble suggestion would be to take all the time you need, and don't let anyone rush you...even yourself.
Now for my usual disclaimer....please take any interpretations as suggestions to sift through and "try on for size," and only keep what seems to "fit" in your situation. If it feels true to you, go with your intuition. If it doesn't feel true, or off-kilter in some way, then explore further for answers that do seem to fit. It might take several re-readings to understand the concept of this interpretation, so just let it sink in. My interpretation isn't meant to be therapy or professional advice, but I sure hope it helped!
Ultimately, each individual dreamer must decide what their own dreams mean. Please do not take anyone's word as "gospel" if it doesn't feel right to you, whether they have a PH.D or all the experience and fancy titles in the world. If it doesn't hit the mark for *you*, then it's not for you. You'll know.
Please let me know what your thoughts are on the interpretation. I appreciate your feedback.
A RESPONSE FROM RICHARD :
thank you so much for the interpretation. I waited so long to answer because I did want to carefully consider it and see what "rang true" for me. I have come to the conclusion that you did an excellent job in sorting out the symbols, and I really appreciate your advice. You put your finger on some issues that I had been avoiding. Now that the dream, and your interpretation, have help me clarify them, I can act.
It's good to hear that my dream interpretation was helpful for you. You supplied the dream so it's your own inner guidance that's working for you. Now that you know the valuable info stored in your dreams, you may want to learn how to decipher the symbols for yourself and have the best guide possible for you throughout your life. Good luck making your choices, and thank you for submitting your dream to the G21 Sea of Dreams Contest!
Wishing you enlightening dreams,
